Last fall, the Greater Boston Neighborhood Noise Survey was launched to gather a better understanding of urban residents’ responses to environmental noise. As a researcher, it was very important that my research extended beyond the ivory tower and directly reached the communities in which I operated. The first Greater Boston Neighborhood Noise Report Card will be freely available to download this fall on our website.
Conducting the Greater Boston Neighborhood Noise Survey was such a learning experience. The education obtained has been leveraged into a new and improved survey–one that digs deeper into the relationship between noise and health. I also wanted to move beyond the Greater Boston Area and capture the noise experience in other parts of the country. Therefore, I would like to introduce you to the National Neighborhood Noise Survey, which will be conducted in the Greater Areas of the following cities across the United States:
- Boston, Massachusetts
- Boise, Idaho
- Chicago, Illinois
- Hartford, Connecticut
- New York City, New York
- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
- Portland, Maine
- Seattle, Washington
- Worcester, Massachusetts

I’ve updated the survey platform to include secured and encrypted responses so that you can be assured of complete privacy. Translations into Spanish, Simplified Chinese, Vietnamese, and Portuguese will be available soon!
