Our inaugural Community Sound Portrait is special in so many ways. Not only do firsts set the tone for what is to come, they represent the point of no return. As I sat down with Julio to finalize our first portrait, we both looked at each other for what seemed like an eternity–not really saying anything but both understanding that we are embarking on a different kind of journey. We were saying, without really saying: Are we ready?
The answer is a resounding YES. Urban environmental noise is ubiquitous. Some of the noise residents enjoy as it defines cultures and delineates communities. Other noise fragments the quality of life and health of city residents. Our Community Sound Portrait Series (portraits.noiseandthecity.org) tells both of these stories–from the vantage point of individuals living and working in the city of Boston and surrounding areas. We feel especially happy to share our first portrait with you–Mrs. Level, a teacher in Boston. On the eve of the birth of our site, Ms. Level is, too, about to give birth! I think that Julio did an amazing job of capturing this moment!
